3 postdocs in global crop monitoring @ Seoul National University

(last update on 13 Sep 2020)

We are seeking three postdoctoral fellows for a global crop monitoring project. Three positions include 1) crop type mapping, 2) crop growth conditions monitoring, and 3) image fusion. The postdocs will integrate multiple satellite remote sensing data, crop model, massive ground data, and machine learning. Target crops include corn, wheat and soybean, initially. We aim to monitor <2 months time lag. We will apply different spatial and temporal resolutions for global and selected regions.

Postdoc 1 will work on crop type mapping by merging massive ground truth data, machine learning techniques, and satellite remote sensing. We already initiated building ground truth data so more focus will be given to machine learning and remote sensing.

Postdoc 2 will work on monitoring crop growth situations (GPP, ET, NPP) and estimating yields. We expect combining simple approach (e.g. NIRv and SIF) and mechanistic approach (e.g. BESS, carbon allocation models) with available ground data such as FLUXNET, FAO, crop stat books.

Postdoc 3 will work on image fusion. Both crop type mapping and growth monitoring will require fine resolution remote sensing data in both space and time as many crop fields in the world are fragmented and heterogeneous. We aim to apply image fusion (Landsat, Setntinel, MODIS, cubesat etc) for selected regions.

We strongly encourage applying to those positions if you are passionate for those topics, have great ideas to achieve this complex, challenging task, are learning animal, and are willing to join our adventure towards the vision, “A sustainable world where ecological information is available and accessible to anyone.”

Seoul National University is located in the Gwanak Mountain, southern part of the Seoul City in South Korea. Numerous mountain trails are accessible in the campus whereas “Gangnam”, the center of amusement in Seoul, is within 30 min. There are diverse groups of international students/scholars. There is a dormitory for international scholars which offers low cost, nice housing for family or single.

This is a 1-year position. Pending successful performance, the position may be renewed up to 3 years. The position is available immediately. The review of applications will start immediately until the position is filled. Please submit applications (including cover letter, CV, and the names and contact information of three references) via email to Dr. Youngryel Ryu (ryuyr77@gmail.com) with title “[Global Crop Postdoc]”. If you have any question, feel free to send emails to Dr Ryu. Welcome to visit our lab webpage to see our research and activity (http://environment.snu.ac.kr/).
